The foundations of the historic Crooked House pub and the building’s bricks will remain on site as hazardous materials are removed, the local authority has confirmed.
Officers from South Staffordshire Council attended the site of the demolished pub on Monday during a protest after receiving reports that contractors were clearing away the remains of the building.
The council reached an agreement with the contractors that all work would cease so that a comprehensive schedule of works could be submitted by them and reviewed by the authorities.
The Black Country pub was demolished against the advice of council officers earlier this month after a fire gutted the 18th century building. The police are treating the fire as arson.
In an update this week, Cllr Lees said: ‘The council is continuing to work behind the scenes with the relevant organisations and it’s important our focus is on a robust and thorough investigation. I would ask that we are given time to do so and I can reassure the public that we are doing everything in our power to investigate the matter thoroughly.’
