Lambeth Council's controversial low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) scheme has been ruled ‘unlawful’ by the High Court.
Deputy high court judge Jim Smith said the council had ignored a 53-page document about the impact of the scheme prepared by the campaign group West Dulwich Action Group (WDAG) before proceeding with an 18-month pilot of the LTN.
Judge Smith said the content of the document was ‘highly relevant’ to the debate over the scheme and the council’s failure to consider it was a ‘serious failing’.
A WDAG spokesperson said: ‘This ruling sends a clear signal to all councils nationwide: communities will no longer tolerate top-down, poorly conceived schemes that ignore local input, which prioritise revenue over real solutions to issues like pollution.’
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, deputy leader of Lambeth Council (Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air), said the local authority would consider the implications of the judgement but added the scheme will remain in place until the court has given further directions.
