The Green Party has named Emily O’Brien as leader of its newly formed Local Government Association group.
She has been a Lewes District Council councillor since 2019 and is currently the East Sussex local authority’s cabinet member for climate, nature and food systems.
Cllr O’Brien is already involved in the LGA’s committee structure, as vice chair of its neighbourhoods committee. She is also a former deputy chair of the council body’s people and places board.
Between 2022 and 2025, she held a national spokesperson role within the Green Party on food, agriculture and rural welfare issues.
‘We're pleased to announce that Emily O'Brien, Cabinet member for climate, nature and food systems at Lewes District Council, has been elected by Green councillors to lead the new Local Government Association Green Group,’ confirmed the party.
Cllr O’Brien added that she is ‘excited’ to lead ‘the brand-new Green Group’ at the LGA.
Her appointment follows last month’s announcement by the party that it would form its first LGA group.
Political parties can form their own group within the councils’ body if their total share of the vote exceeds 5%. Following May’s local elections, the party’s share reached 8.2% after gaining more than 400 councillors.
