The Government has set out its vision for how infrastructure in the UK can be delivered more efficiently.
The Treasury today published a consultation 'Infrastructure procurement routemap: a guide to improving delivery capability' as part of its cost review programme.
Ministers want to provide a coherent approach for assessing and building large scale projects, drawing on case study examples like London's Crossrail project and incorporating best practice tools.
Infrastructure UK has been tasked with reducing the cost of such projects by at least 15% by 2015. Many infrastructure projects in the UK have been dogged by delays and rising costs in recent years.
The Government acknowledged there is no 'one size fits all' solution for the delivery of infrastructure but stressed common characteristics for effective delivery of projects must be applied more consistently.
Lord Deighton, commercial secretary to the Treasury, said: 'This important work provides the private and public sector with the tools to assess capability at delivering complex infrastructure projects. Our goal is to ensure that programmes are delivered efficiently and represent the best value for money. This will also be reflected in my upcoming infrastructure delivery reviews.'
The consultation closes on April 22 and a final toolkit will be published during the spring.
