The Government has again been urged by local government groups to roll out legislation that allows remote council meetings.
Organisations belonging to the Digital Democracy Partnership (DDP), such as Lawyers in Local Government (LLG) and the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), have reiterated their call for the Government to make this a priority.
The DDP has written to the Government to ask that the topic of legislation on remote attendance is given precedence in the next parliamentary session.
While the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) had announced its intentions to implement the legislation that permits remote meetings in a response last year, the changes have not yet been made.
An LLG spokesperson said: ‘LLG, along with others have pursued remote and hybrid meeting provision for councils in England for the past 6 years.
‘Given the imminent changes in the local authority landscape due to unitarisation, devolution and proposed standards reform, it seems pragmatic for the Government to legislate now for remote provision to enable a joined-up approach for councils’.
The MHCLG has been contacted for comment.
