A man who used a stolen identity to access a flat near Grenfell Tower before attempting to claim funds meant for fire victims has been jailed, a court heard.
Adam Mejri, 47, used a previous tenant's identity documents to take over a flat close to the north Kensington block where 72 people died in 2017.
Although his attempts to claim from the £5,000 Grenfell support fund failed due to identity concerns, he made fraudulent benefits and council support claims totalling more than £160,000.
Mejri also redirected the genuine tenant's post and sub-let the flat for £1,200 a month.
At Southwark Crown Court on Friday, he was jailed for 42 months after pleading guilty to fraud and failing to notify changes in circumstances.
Minister Andrew Western told the BBC it was ‘a shocking and calculated fraud’ that exploited public support systems and sought to profit from the Grenfell tragedy.
