Councils must be given greater control of local finances in order to turn the ‘rhetoric’ of localism into reality, according a new report from SOLACE.
Local Roots to Growth argues that councils should be given greater freedom to borrow, spend and earn in order to shape and grow the local economy. It also argues councils must perform the lead role in shaping local place and be proactive at developing the local economy.
Director of Solace, Graeme McDonald, said: ‘Local areas are moving with real purpose in developing growth strategies. Councils are in the driving seat, but there is a risk that central government apply the handbrake to ambitious local growth initiatives.‘
The report also calls on councils to be ‘brave’ in long-term planning and investment in infrastructure and skills, to ensure the right type of growth is delivered sustainably.
