Exeter ranks No. 1 council on social media

Exeter City Council beats the big metropolitan cities to the top spot of the social media charts.

GovRank measures the performance of local authorities on sites such as Facebook and Twitter and ranks all 400 councils in the UK for their digital performance in communicating to the public.

The South West council has been named number one in the monthly ranking system.

Exeter topped the rankings shortly after a fire destroyed the historic Royal Clarence Hotel and other city centre buildings.

One Facebook live video on the Friday morning of the blaze reached over 611,000 people and the council tweets over the week gained over 590,000 impressions.

The city council now has 17,200 followers on Twitter and 5,853 page likes on Facebook.

‘More and more people are finding out about what we are doing and what’s going on it Exeter through our social media accounts,’ said Cllr Ollie Pearson, lead councillor responsible for communications.

‘The fire was and still is devastating for the city but through Facebook and Twitter we have been able to keep the public and businesses up-to-date with developments as they happen and mitigate the upheaval that an incident of this proportion causes.

‘We live in a digital age but at the same time we appreciate that social media isn’t for everyone and that’s why we continue to communicate our services news and events through traditional media as well as our popular social media accounts.’
