Crowborough Town Council plans to spend nearly £16,000 on CCTV improvements.
Councillors have agreed to introduce CCTV system upgrades that would cost £2,471 in annual maintenance fees as part of a three-year contract.
The move was approved in a council meeting last month, which confirmed that the cameras will not use facial recognition or audio recording.
A draft of the minutes from the meeting reveals that a member of the public had voiced concerns about whether further cameras should be installed near schools, the army camp, and Ferndale Community Centre, as well as raising questions about inadequate council funding and suggesting the introduction of town wardens.
According to the document, the meeting had confirmed that while the local authority’s general reserves will be used to fund the improvements, the council will ‘seek reimbursement from the Home Office and Wealden District Council’ for the project.
The police will also be required to deliver regular progress reports to update the council on the performance of the CCTV system.
Cllr Andrew Wilson ‘advised that he was speaking in a capacity as a member of the public’ and ‘stated that he was pleased with the resolution of the Environment Committee to upgrade the CCTV cameras in the town’.
