Local authorities are dealing with fly-tipping incidents every 40 seconds, according to analysis of Government figures.
VPS, managers of vacant properties, welcomed new regulations that came into force earlier this month giving councils more power to sieze vehicles involved in fly-tipping.
Anthony Owen, managing director of VPS, said: ‘Fly-tipping is endemic in the UK. Last year the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reported a 20 % increase in fly-tipping on the previous year. Local authorities recorded 852,000 incidents of fly-tipping. That’s the equivalent of rubbish being dumped illegally every 40 seconds.’
Mr Owen added that fire services also have to deal with over 300 incidents a day where rubbish has been set alight outdoors and in non-dwellings.
