Attempts to implement Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies in local government have been branded ‘pitiful’ in a new report.
BYOD in Local Government: What are we waiting for?, published by think tank Parliament Street, is critical of the schemes operating in London. Out of the 14 boroughs that responded to its freedom of information request, only five have BYOD policies in place.
Steven George-Hilley, director of technology at Parliament Street, said: ‘Despite the overwhelming case for BYOD schemes in local government, London borough councils have made a pitiful effort to explore and implement these important initiatives.
'BYOD as a policy either does not exist or has so little employee engagement it renders the purpose of having it meaningless.’
The report found that Camden Council had the largest BYOD scheme in place, with 252 employee devices activated. The smallest scheme in place was in Wandsworth, who only had two devices in operation.
