Leicestershire County Council is considering bringing back beavers to help mitigate flood risk.
The local authority is reportedly discussing the possibility of reintroducing the animals in council-run county parks.
According to the council's cabinet member for environment and flooding, Cllr Adam Tilbury, the move could support flood prevention and habitat restoration goals, as well as increasing tourism across Leicestershire, the BBC has reported.
Water flow can be slowed by the creation of beaver dams, diverting water from areas where flooding is common.
A council spokesperson said: ‘This could be an exciting opportunity for Leicestershire, and we are in the very early stages of exploring the potential for beaver reintroduction.
‘Active engagement with relevant partners will be needed to consider key factors, including environmental impacts, farming and flood risk considerations, regulatory requirements, and the views of local communities and stakeholders.’
