Newark & Sherwood District Council has unveiled a new council tax relief scheme to ease financial pressures on households where a family member is living with a terminal illness.
Under the new policy, eligible households already receiving Local Council Tax Support (LCTS) will be entitled to 100% relief from their council tax bills if they, or someone they live with, is receiving end-of-life care.
Responding to recommendations from the charity Marie Curie, the scheme will be available from April 2026 and continue until the end of the financial year in which the person passes away.
Cllr Paul Peacock emphasised that the initiative is about ‘compassion, dignity and is a small way we can support residents when they need us most.’
