More than 100 Conservative council leaders have backed government plans to devolve power over Sunday trading hours.
The 102 council leaders have written to planning minister Brandon Lewis urging him to press ahead with the proposals, arguing it would ‘help us deliver what is best for our local communities’.
‘We want the government to put its trust in councils,’ the letter states. It adds: ‘We are best placed to make decisions about Sunday trading.’
The proposed changes would give councils the power to extend Sunday trading hours and ‘zone’ any relaxation to prioritise high streets and city centres.
