Mental and physical health recovery will be treated equally in Salford, with the council investing £500,000 in treatment.
Salford City Centre has become the first city in Greater Manchester to invest equally in care for those recovering for mental and physical illness.
The money will fund specialist intermediate care centre to help people coming out of hospital and and a new hostel to provide the same level of care for those recovering from mental illness,
‘This is about treating people equally - whether they are recovering from a poorly mind or a poorly body,’ said cllr Peter Connor, assistant mayor for adult social care.
‘People are cared for in The Limes while we help them find the support they need to move back home and live independently or move on to the right accommodation for their needs. They spend up to six weeks there.
‘We wanted to do something similar for people who have been in hospital because of poor mental health - though the timescale for recovery may be much longer.’
The council said the new Hollybank centre would help break down the stigma that often surrounds mental health and help people get well enough to move back into the wider community.
