Wirral Council has proposed the use of traffic cameras to enhance its school safety scheme.
The local authority’s School Streets scheme was launched in November 2021, with the aim of improving traffic and air quality by temporarily closing school roads during drop-off and pick-up periods.
Whilst Greenleas Primary School has already benefitted from the installation of an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) traffic camera, the council plans to implement the technology at five further local schools.
Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of Wirral Council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: ‘This technology has been really successful at Greenleas, ensuring children are able to get to and from school safely.’
Last week, the council launched a public consultation to gather ‘local knowledge’ and welcome feedback from residents about the traffic camera initiative.
According to Cllr Grey, the local authority is ‘keen to get people’s comments about the proposals’, which are designed to create ‘a safer, calmer and more environmentally friendly atmosphere for families at the start and end of the school day’.
