Kirklees Council has approved a £5.4m investment into local schools, funding repair projects and facilities for pupils with complex needs.
Over 25 schools will benefit from building improvements such as heating and electrical renovations, which the council is undertaking to ensure educational facilities ‘remain safe, warm, dry and secure’.
The funding was confirmed in a cabinet meeting on June 10 and distributed based on a scoring system used to determine the schools requiring urgent support.
Alongside the repair projects, the funding will be used to boost the number of places for pupils with complex needs in local schools, enabling the council to provide specialist support for 18 children requiring ‘Additionally Resourced Provisions’.
Cllr Jane Rylah, Cabinet member for Education, said: ‘It is a major priority to support our more vulnerable learners and transform services for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
‘There is a growing demand for specialist school places across the country. Here in Kirklees, we’re doing everything possible to secure more places within the district and meet our local need.’
