Sefton Council has confirmed that a fire at Southport Pier is ‘not being treated as suspicious’.
The blaze at the grade II listed attraction took place on Sunday night, and saw three fire engines called to the scene, according to a statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
It has since been revealed that the fire service thought the incident ‘accidental’ and caused by an electrical fault.
A Sefton Council spokesperson said the local authority does not believe the fire has resulted in ‘any significant damage to the structure’.
Following its closure in 2022, the pier’s future has been up for discussion in recent months, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves reportedly declaring the Government’s aims to back the reopening project.
The council spokesperson added: ‘We continue to liaise with the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Government and we expect to hear more detail about the process and timescales for the recently announced Growth Mission Fund, which will fund refurbishment of the pier, very shortly.
‘Any repairs necessary as a result of this fire will of course be factored into those works.’
