Local authority leaders have welcomed the Government’s announcement that self-sampling kits used to check for cervical cancer will soon be available.
The Department for Health and Social Care in England said the availability of home HPV screening kits from January will help tackle ‘deeply entrenched barriers’ that keep women away from cervical screening.
Cllr David Fothergill, chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, described the kit as a ‘game-changer’.
‘Each year, more than 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK,’ he said.
‘Early detection can significantly reduce the incidence and mortality rates associated with this cancer,’ he added.
