The transfer of four community assets could create over £55k savings for a council.
East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) has approved proposals to sell public toilets, a car park, an open space and a building to Littleport Town Council (LTC) for £1 each in a Finance and Assets Committee meeting last Thursday.
In the committee report, it is stated that LTC requested the transfer of the assets on October 20 after having ‘considered the importance of these assets remaining in local control for the benefit of residents in the context of local government reorganisation’.
The freehold transfer price for the assets each stand at £1, with the public toilets also requiring a £20,829 payment for 1 year running costs to be made by ECDC.
According to the report, the move could create savings of £56,139 by 2028/29 if agreed by members.
Cllr David Miller, a Conservative member of the Littleport ward, said: ‘Granting this request seems the best way of ensuring these assets remain where they belong, in the hands of Littleport community through its Town Council.’
He also amended the motion by adding that the car park land must only be used for the agreed purpose.
