Brixton Academy will open next month for the first time since two people died in a crowd crush in December 2022.
The music venue's licence was suspended by Lambeth Council following the deaths of 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo, who was attending a concert by singer Asake, and 23-year-old security guard Gabrielle Hutchinson.
Last September, the local authority said the south London venue could reopen once it had met ‘77 extensive and robust new conditions designed to promote public safety’, including new crowd management systems, more detailed risk assessments, a new ticketing system, and new security.
Brixton Academy announced yesterday that it will reopen on 19 April with tribute acts for Nirvana and the Smiths.
The Metropolitan Police is continuing to investigate the crushing incident and seek information from witnesses.
