Bristol City Council is set to fall short of its goal to be a net zero council by the end of this financial year.
After becoming the first council to declare a Climate Emergency in November 2018, the local authority set a target to become carbon neutral for its direct corporate emissions by the end of 2025/26.
A report by the council’s Environment and Sustainability policy committee forecasts an 88% reduction in the authority’s corporate emissions, which include emissions associated with its buildings and fleet, between 2016-2025.
Cllr Martin Fodor, chair of the Environment and Sustainability committee, said the council’s efforts at achieving net zero were ‘bearing fruit’ but added they ‘cannot linger long if we’re to meet the national target set in law.’
The Government has set a date of 2050 for the whole of the UK to be carbon neutral.
