Brighton & Hove City Council has thanked the emergency services after a fire broke out over the weekend at the historic Royal Albion Hotel.
The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called out on Saturday evening after smoke was seen coming from the hotel.
The building was subsequently evacuated and the surrounding area closed, while the council opened a rest centre for Saturday night.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service began to scale back operations this morning (17 July). There are no reports of casualties.
Council leader, Cllr Bella Sankey, said: ‘These are very sad scenes in our city this evening.
‘On behalf of the city council I want to give my thanks to the emergency services for attending the fire at the historic Royal Albion Hotel in the heart of our city.
‘Thank you as well to all those who helped evacuate people from the hotel and the surrounding area.’
