Birmingham City Council has announced 90% of its roads will have a 20mph speed limit.
The council will introduce a 20mph limit for all residential roads and those designated a high street function such as ones with school entrances.
The £7m scheme, funded through Local Transport Plan (LTP) Integrated Block Allocations, has been welcomed by campaign group 20’s Plenty for Us.
Founder of 20’s Plenty for Us, Rod King, said: ‘With Birmingham City and City of London becoming the latest traffic authorities committing to wide 20mph limits this creates a pivotal moment in enhancing the liveability, safety and active mobility of our communities.’
The group is also calling on the Department for Transport to update its signage regulations to allow local authorities to install repeater signs to the exceptions left at 30mph and above.
Last week, the City of London voted to impose an area-wide 20mph speed limit.
