Business rates could pose a threat to 60,000 small businesses and 150,000 jobs, data finds.
According to a survey by Opinion Matters, one in eight small business owners on local high streets have confirmed that without reforms to business rates, they are at risk of shutting down.
A further 10% of owners have reported that staffing cuts could be required if changes are not made in the Autumn Budget.
Co-op researchers found that the Government’s commitment to providing relief for small shops is doubted by roughly 69% of adults nationwide, with members pushing for the delivery of additional community spaces and independent businesses to preserve local identity.
Shirine Khoury-Haq, Co-op Group CEO, said: ‘As we approach a critical Autumn Budget, there’s a real danger that the voices of small shops – and the communities they serve – are not being heard.
‘Local shops aren’t just businesses; they’re part of the social fabric of Britain. For some, a visit to a local store is one of the few chances they have to chat to someone and feel connected.’
Ms Khoury-Haq added: ‘This research shows a clear public mandate for action. Regardless of how they vote, the majority of people want the Government to do more to protect their high streets.’
