Animal rights activists have written to Norfolk County Council requesting that a locally famous 'Chicken Roundabout' be renamed 'Save the Chickens Roundabout' – and is offering to fund a chicken sculpture at its centre if the council agrees.
PETA says the renaming would highlight the conditions faced by chickens in Norfolk, which it describes as the ‘mega-farm capital of Europe’ with more than 70 large-scale intensive poultry operations in the county.
PETA Vice President Dawn Carr said that while the roundabout and its wild chickens may be locally cherished, most chickens in Norfolk are confined to sheds and never see daylight.
‘PETA is asking Norfolk County Council to embrace a compassionate roundabout rename and a statue that encourages everyone to leave chickens in peace,’ she added.
The campaign draws attention to the scale of intensive poultry farming in the county and aims to encourage members of the public to adopt a vegan diet.
