Sefton Council has welcomed confirmation that the Government will provide full funding, estimated at around £20m, to restore Southport Pier — a historic Victorian structure closed since December 2022 over safety concerns.
The restoration is expected to take 12 to 14 months, with work beginning next year. Cllr Marion Atkinson, leader of Sefton Council, described the announcement as 'a vote of confidence in our town’s future', recognising the pier’s importance to local residents, tourism, and the economy.
The pier’s restoration is part of a wider regeneration plan for Southport, which also includes the proposed £10m Town Hall Gardens and development of the Marine Lake Events Centre, both supported by Government and Town Deal funding.
Council and Government will now work to finalise contractor arrangements and move forward with preparatory works, with further updates expected in the coming weeks.
