Work begins on Staffordshire development creating 1,700 jobs

Work has begun on a multimillion-pound Enterprise Zone development being backed by Staffordshire County Council.

The Chatterley Valley West development in Newcastle-under-Lyme is set to create hundreds of jobs in north Staffordshire.

It involves major private sector investment, with £3.7m funding through the Kidsgrove Town Deal and £3.5m investment by Staffordshire County Council which will be paid back through business rates.

The county council is working closely with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, the Stoke-on-Trent Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and developer Harworth.

Roads and infrastructure at the site are now being constructed to make way for the development of industrial units.

Outline planning permission for the site allows for up to 1.17 million sq ft of development.

It is estimated the brownfield site in Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone, just off the A500, could create up to 1,700 jobs. When the site is fully built it could release total business rates of more than £2.5m a year.

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills Philip White said: ‘Chatterley Valley is providing us with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unlock a major parcel of disused industrial land, close to strategic transport links.

‘It will enable existing businesses to expand and for new ones to invest in Staffordshire, from across the UK and internationally.’
