City councillors in Worcester have endorsed a new 20-year transport strategy which is aimed at delivering a more sustainable transport system.

The plan is intended to reduce the number of car parks in the city centre and increase the number of cycle lanes. It also includes measures to restrict heavy goods lorries and introduce a bike hire scheme and an improved pedestrian route.

The city council also called on Worcestershire County Council to prioritise the strategy's development.

Cllr Lynn Denham, joint leader of Worcester City Council, said: ‘The proposals in the draft transport strategy will make Worcester a more attractive destination for residents and tourists, and also provide a dramatic boost to our local economy by supporting local businesses based in the city centre. We have already started to make positive progress in delivering the vision and we are very much looking forward to working with the county council to take the plan forward.

‘As well as making the city centre easier to navigate, many of the initiatives in the strategy will help to meet the legal requirements to improve the air quality in Worcester's City Centre.’
