Whitehall launches £95m high street fund

The high streets that will benefit from a £95m Government fund have been identified.

Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan named 69 towns across the country where disused historic buildings will be turned into shops, houses and community centres.

She says it will help traditional businesses adapt to better compete with online outlets as part of a drive to help high streets adapt to changing consumer habits and 'breathe new life' into towns and cities.

Projects include Tottenham in London where £2m will be used to restore shop-fronts and facades in the High Road and Bedford where up to £2m will help reveal the historic features of buildings in the high street.

Coventry has been awarded £2m for a project in The Burges, its ancient shopping street, while up to £2m will be given to Stoke-on-Trent to redevelop vacant buildings in its conservation area with a focus on creating residential spaces above shops.

Ms Nicky Morgan said: 'Our nation’s heritage is one of our great calling cards to the world, attracting millions of visitors to beautiful historic buildings that sit at the heart of our communities.

'It is right that we ensure these buildings are preserved for future generations but it is important that we make them work for the modern world.'
