Local government trade unions are aiming to submit their next one-year pay claim in January, The MJ understands.

The timetable is expected to be compatible with employers responding by the end of February, theoretically allowing the offer to be agreed by the start of April after talks.

Unison’s head of local government, Mike Short, said: ‘Persistent low wages are a real problem.

'Local authorities and schools are struggling to hang onto experienced staff and fill vacant posts.

'That’s why it’s important to get things moving quickly for next year.
