Union vows to oppose controversial crackdown image

Local government’s largest trade union has warned any attempt to impose a controversial crackdown will be met with strong opposition.

At the Trades Union Congress (TUC) annual conference in Liverpool yesterday, union leaders rallied against the Strikes (Minimum Service Level) Act, which came into force in July and is designed to reduce the impact of strikes.

The controversial Act gives the business secretary discretionary powers to determine suitable minimum service levels that must be maintained during any industrial action across education, the NHS, nuclear industries, fire and rescue and border security.

But trade unions fear the Act could be expanded to include other sectors – including local government.
