Regeneration plans for Sheffield city centre have been cut back because of rising costs.

Improvements were set for a pedestrianised shopping area and surrounding streets, but the council said costs had risen from £8.2m to £18m.

As a result some work will be delayed until further funding is found.

A council report said overspending was due to increased costs of materials and unplanned extra features such as anti-terrorism bollards.

Last year the council said it had ambitious plans for the city centre which would ‘transform the contribution it makes regionally and nationally.’

It said: ‘Our vision is for a well-connected, high profile city centre with a quality environment that supports business, employment, residential and cultural opportunities.

‘The city centre will be a hub for learning, employment, and highly skilled jobs but also a place where people can live.’

Mazher Iqbal, co-chairman of the transport, regeneration and climate change committee, said: ‘Due to a number of factors, many of which are outside of our control such as inflationary pressures, it was proposed to scope the plans.’

Concerns were raised by other councillors about the rising costs.

Cllr Andrew Sangar said he had ‘a lot of questions in mind’ after reading the report.
