Progress on homelessness at risk without continued focus on a scheme to provide accommodation quickly, according to housing experts in Scotland.

A report released on the first day of Scotland's Housing Festival calls on the Scottish government to extend the Rapid Rehousing Transition Plan which reduces the time people spend in temporary accommodation.

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), with support from Fife Council, says local authority progress on homelessness prevention is at risk if the scheme comes to an end.

It says the Scottish government has failed to give an assurance that the initiative will continue after next year.

Gavin Smith, CIH Scotland chair and service manager at Fife Council, said recent media coverage confirmed the extreme pressures local authorities and homelessness services are facing.

But the research confirmed there was very positive progress being made and ‘now is not the time to lose focus.’

‘There is no doubt that we need to increase housing supply, but we also need to support the positive progress that is being made in developing transformational change and monitor the impact as the RRTP journey continues,’ he said.
