London mayor Sadiq Khan will today commit to building homes with capped rents as part of his bid for re-election next month.

Mr Khan said he was ‘not willing to stand by and do nothing’ after calling on the Government for the power to freeze rents in the capital for years.

If re-elected on 2 May, Mr Khan said he would initially deliver 6,000 ‘rent control’ homes, which ‘key workers and middle-income Londoners’ could afford.

Deals would be made with developers so that rents are ‘strictly linked to key worker incomes’.

Mr Khan will also today pledge to be a ‘renters’ champion in City Hall’, and will say he would work with a future Labour government to deliver a ‘new deal’ for renters across London.

He will also renew his attack on the Conservatives for being ‘in the pockets of the landlord lobby’ and accuse Tory MPs of continuing to ‘delay and dilute’ legislation for renters’ reform.
