The Old Courthouse in Cockermouth, Cumbria has partially collapsed into a river.

The back of the Grade II listed building, which was built in 1893, was damaged yesterday.

The ‘iconic’ building is privately owned and there had been an ‘ongoing issue’, according to Cumberland Council.

The local authority said it was working with emergency services to assess the damage and protect public safety, with the bridge over the River Cocker closed as a precautionary measure.

No injuries have been reported and the river, despite the debris that has landed in it, is still flowing.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: ‘We would like to reassure the local community that although the collapse is near to our flood walls, the walls remain intact and the town’s flood risk has not increased as a result.’

A council spokesperson said: ‘A multi-agency response is now in place, and we will provide updates as soon as they are available.’
