Glasgow City Council looks likely to extend a scheme offering voluntary redundancy for three years as it plans a ‘significant reduction’ in staff to close a £60m funding gap.

A report due to be considered when the council sets its budget this week says some of the reduction in spending will be delivered by not filling vacancies and attrition, but voluntary severance will also be needed.

There has been speculation that the council’s plans could reduce teacher numbers by as many as 800.

In response, both the SNP-led council sought to block councils from cutting teacher numbers.

The report went on to say there was uncertainty around any funding cuts that could result in reducing teacher numbers and said there were ‘ongoing discussions between Cosla and Scottish government on this matter.’

The Scottish Labour group in the city has announced it would not put forward its own budget proposals.

The Green group appealed to ‘all parties to work together in a collective effort in the best interests of the city.’

Its leader Jon Molyneux said: ‘With just one day left, Greens across Glasgow are giving voice to those whose livelihoods are at risk, and those communities who will bear the brunt of cuts to services.’
