Museums in Derby have warned that planned cuts by the city council could have a ‘devastating effect’ on their services.
Derby Museums, the charitable trust that operates three museums in Derby, has been asked to accept a cut in its annual grant of 10% from £710,000 to £639,000.
The trust warned that when combined with high inflation and the energy crisis, the cumulative effect of cuts and increased costs are likely to have a ‘devastating effect’.
‘We will be compelled to explore all options over the next year or so, which includes site closures, reduction in opening hours and staffing, discontinuing of free family activities and the introduction of admission charges,’ said a statement on Derby Museums’ website.
A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: ‘The council recognises the importance of culture and vibrancy to our city and the role it plays in our ambition for Derby, but due to a “perfect storm” of rising costs and inflation, the Council has to make an unprecedented level of savings to balance its budget. Regrettably we’re having to ask all our services to reduce their budgets by 10%.’
