Councillors take final step towards creation of new Weymouth council

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is one step closer towards setting up of a new town council for Weymouth.

Councillors approved the second formal Order relating to the creation of Weymouth Town Council at a Full Council meeting last week.

The approved Order, which is the legal document confirming last January’s decision to create a town council, sets out details of what will transfer to the new council when it comes into existence on 1 April this year.

It also includes details of the assets and employees set to transfer and sets out the agenda of the first council meeting, which will be held this May.

‘The Order is the last official piece in the jigsaw enabling the set up of Weymouth Town Council,’ said Cllr Alison Reed, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council briefholder for Corporate Affairs and Continuous Improvement and chair of the Shadow Management Committee.

‘But there is still a lot more work going on behind the scenes to ensure the new town council will be up and running when it comes into existence on 1 April.

‘This includes drafting new policies, planning how customers will access services, working arrangements for staff, IT provision and so much more.

‘I would like to thank officers as to they continue to work hard work to deliver this brand new council for the people of Weymouth.’
