Council leaders recognised in Queen’s birthday honours

Local government leaders and chief executives have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list.

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, former leader of Poole Borough Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill, leader of Bexley Borough Council, Mrs Cheryl Coppell, chief executive of London Borough of Havering and Claire Kober, leader of Haringey Borough Council all received an OBE for services to local government.

Communities secretary, Greg Clark, congratulated those in local government who were honoured this year. He said: ‘It is great to see so many individuals from the local government, housing, fire and voluntary sectors given this enormous accolade.

‘I pay tribute to all of these dedicated people who work so tirelessly for their community. Well done to all of them.’

Other council figures were also awarded an MBE for services to local government in this year’s honour’s list:

• Cllr Elaine Woodburn, former leader of Copeland Council
• Cllr Jean Goad District at Arun District, West Sussex
• Cllr Robert Boyce at Maldon District Council
• Cllr and deputy mayor Lesley Jones at Brent Council
• Cllr Judi Billing Councillor at North Hertfordshire District Council

Other honours included an OBE for Cllr James McMahon, leader of Oldham Council for services to the community, a MBE for Cllr Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster Council for services to planning and local government, and a BEM for Cllr Frank Delderfield for services to the communities in Great Totham and Maldon, Essex.
