Portsmouth City Council has granted planning permission for a memorial to honour more than 830 sailors who died in the sinking of the HMS Royal Oak during World War II.
The 8ft HMS Royal Oak memorial was proposed by the HMS Royal Oak Association, which was established to honour the 833 men who died when their ship was sunk by a German U-boat in Scapa Flow, Orkney.
HMS Royal Oak’s home port was Portsmouth.
Cllr Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘Many hundreds of Portsmouth residents lost their lives in the sinking of HMS Royal Oak, making the event an important part of the city's history.
‘As a proud maritime city, home to the Royal Navy, it's right that a Royal Oak memorial is here in Portsmouth.’
