Council forecasts £18m savings demand

Government cuts could force Flintshire County Council to find £18m of savings next year, with social services, education and waste collections all under scrutiny.

The town hall is preparing for up to a 4.5% fall in its funding from the Welsh Government, with councillors fearing some services might have to be reduced or stopped altogether.

Flintshire will now undertake a ‘Big Budget Conversation’ with its residents to discover local opinion on spending.

A live twitter debate to discuss the plans will be staged with council leader, Cllr Aaron Shotton, and chief executive, Colin Everett, on 1 September.

Further public consultations will take place in late autumn to share Flintshire’s decisions with the community.

Cllr Shotton said: ‘In the Big Budget Conversation we set out the growing risks to local services because of national budget cuts, and set the scene for the big choices Flintshire County Council will have to make for next year and the years to come.

‘We also explain how and when we plan to open up those choices for public debate, and how local communities and local organisations might help plan the future with us.

‘There are two opportunities for residents to join the conversation and it is important that everyone has their say.’
