If central government ‘won't step up’, it should stand aside and allow local and regional leaders to forge ahead with decarbonisation, net zero tsar Chris Skidmore has warned.

Launching a new report on net zero today, the Conservative MP said the ‘vital role’ of local and regional government had been ‘overlooked in too many discussions about the UK’s net zero commitments’.

The report has called on the chancellor to seek to set up a consolidated Local Net Zero Fund at the Spending Review in November that is aligned with other longer-term funds ‘in order to provide local authorities with greater certainty’.

The Future is Local is the first report from the Local Mission Zero Network and is written jointly by Mr Skidmore and the Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen.
