Doncaster and Barnsley Councils are to consult residents on their preferred devolution deal direction.
Both councils will be holding a community poll to determine if they should join the current Sheffield City Region or a wider Yorkshire agreement.
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: 'I have made it plain that I personally believe a wider Yorkshire deal is the better solution for Doncaster, its people, communities and businesses however I want local people to have their say on what would be a generation changing decision on devolution.
'This is one of the biggest questions Doncaster has faced and I want the voice of local people to be heard. This is why council will be asked to support holding a community poll.'
Leader of Barnsley Council, cllr Sir Steve Houghton, added: ;While this decision is not legally binding on the council, I want to give the residents of Barnsley an opportunity to have their say on what would be a generation changing decision on devolution.
'If the proposal for a community poll is approved at full council on the 9 November 2017, we will do our best to respect the outcome and do all we can to make sure that it’s achieved.'
