Local authorities are spending nearly £1bn less on children and young people’s services than in 2012, new analysis has revealed today.
The research by the Labour Party shows spending on children and young people’s services has fallen from £7,922,425,000 in 2012 to £7,611,364,000 in 2017. In real terms, this represents a cut of nearly £957m.
Angela Rayner, Labour’s shadow education secretary, said: 'Children’s services provide a lifeline to thousands of vulnerable children and families across the country, so it is incredibly worrying to see funding has fallen so dramatically in the past six years.'
Ms Rayner said Labour would increase the money available for children's services, stop the closures of Sure Start centres and provide universal childcare for every 2 to 4 year old if elected.
