The Government has announced plans to build 180,000 new social homes by 2035 as part of the effort to tackle the shortage in temporary accommodation.

Delivered through the £39bn new Social and Affordable Homes Programme, these new houses are part of a package aimed at delivering 300,000 social and affordable homes.

If 180,000 houses for social rent are built by 2035, that would mark a six-fold increase on the number built in the decade to 2024.

Deputy prime minister and housing secretary Angela Rayner said: ‘We are seizing this golden opportunity with both hands to transform this country by building the social and affordable homes we need, so we create a brighter future where families aren’t trapped in temporary accommodation and young people are no longer locked out of a secure home.’

Cllr Adam Hug, housing spokesperson for the Local Government Association (LGA), described the announcement as a ‘meaningful step’ towards addressing the housing crisis.
