Harold Wood Station has had a complete overhaul of the look, feel, and safety of the station which includes the creation of a plaza with a new ramp providing step-free access, as well as stairs leading from Station Road to the ticket office and platforms.
The new plaza boasts a well-lit, safe and modern waiting area providing commuters and the wider community with a more pleasant experience when using the station and surrounding area. Cycle parking is now accessible to all with additional spaces provided to further encourage cycling in the borough.
Marlborough Highways were able to complete the works safely during the Covid-19 pandemic and the station entrance plaza opened in May 2021.
The £4.1m project was funded by the Transport for London (TfL) Crossrail Complementary Measures programme which includes the improvement works at Harold Wood as well as Gidea Park and Romford Stations, all of which were completed by Marlborough.
Councillor Roger Ramsey, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property, said: “Despite the delays caused by the pandemic, I am very happy to see the station now fully reopened. These upgrades at Harold Wood Station will help to make a real difference to the people who move through the area every day, making it a much more pleasant journey and experience for the whole community.”
Will Blostone, Marlborough’s Director, said: “Harold Wood Station has been a fantastic project for Marlborough to be involved in, working closely with Havering Council. Marlborough were able to offer cost engineering solutions and improve the original design through our own innovations thanks to our experienced and knowledgeable team.
“We are proud to have a good working relationship with Havering Council where we can put forward the best solutions to ensure the project meets the set budget. It’s great to see how the improvements have transformed the area around Harold Wood station and we are proud to be a part of it.”
