The Government has been urged to radically reduce the proposed three-year timetable for business rates appeals by district council leaders.
Responding to a consultation on the proposal, the District Councils' Network (DCN) demanded that the suggested period allowed for each stage in the new process be ‘dramatically curtailed’.
DCN has put forward a timetable where the whole process would take no more than a year.
The response read: ‘With councils retaining 100% of business rates income from 2020, the proposals fail to deliver a streamlined and efficient system.
‘They require radical rethinking in order to secure much swifter decisions where a ratepayer challenges the rateable value.
