A by-election is to be held in Peterborough after a recall petition to remove Fiona Onasanya MP secured nearly 20,000 signatures.
Ms Onasanya has been convicted of perverting the course of justice after lying about a speeding offence. She was sentenced to be imprisoned for three months.
The conviction prompted Peterborough City Council to open a petition to decide whether or not Ms Onasanya should lose her seat as an MP.
The petition has now closed and the council has confirmed that the number of electors who supported Ms Onasanya’s removal was 19,261.
This was out of 69,673 electors and represented 27.64% of the area’s electorate – nearly three times the 10% threshold needed to trigger an MP’s removal.
Ms Onasanya is the first MP to be removed by a recall petition.
