Agencies are set to consider flood prevention plans for Gloucestershire after county councillors called for an ‘urgent’ meeting.

Gloucestershire has suffered increasingly frequent flooding in recent years, the county council said, including ‘torrential downpours’ on 12 June this year.

Climate change is set to make flood events even more common, the authority noted.

Councillors said all responsible agencies should discuss how plans to reduce the threat of flooding could be implemented and tested.

The call was put forward in a motion on 13 September, which was passed unanimously.

A spokesperson said: ‘Following the meeting of council on 13 September we are planning to hold a summit with all agencies responsible for flood prevention to discuss plans for future incidents.

‘The council, as Gloucestershire’s lead local flood authority, already works with its local partners extremely well.

‘There are already several multi-agency meetings in place throughout each year to discuss the plans in place and to ensure we are prepared for any flood events in the county.’
